Screening and Discussion: Documenting War-Related Sexual Violence

01 March 2024

Since Russia’s full-scale military aggression began, prosecutors from the Prosecutor General’s Office have documented 270 cases of conflict-related sexual violence. The highest number of cases has been reported in Kherson, Kyiv, and Donetsk regions. Special groups have been established in Ukraine and other countries to record the testimonies of victims of these crimes. Unfortunately, our experience is not unique.

On March 7, at 4:30PM, the DOCU/CLUB Network invites you to join us for a screening of the documentary ABC by Estonian director Madli Lääne and engage in a discussion on the issue of war-related sexual violence.

The film follows the story of Vele, a 19-year-old survivor of sexual violence during the Liberian civil war. Her goal is to learn to read and write to keep up with her seven-year-old daughter. After years of civil war in the country, Vele’s ability to write her own name represents a step away from a painful past and towards a better future.

Panelists:

Khrystyna Kit: Head of the Board of the Association of Women Lawyers of Ukraine JurFem, lawyer, attorney-at-law.

Moderated by Zoia Krasovska, analyst at Lviv Media Forum, and Women in Media NGO.

A representative from the Prosecutor General’s Office from the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in the Context of Armed Conflict will also participate.

The event will be held at Lviv Media Hub, 120H Shevchenka Street, Lviv (KIVSH space, building 1).
