We are launching the discussion programme of the Travelling Docudays UA on DOCUSPACE

16 September 2021

As a part of the Travelling Festival on docuspace.org, we are launching the discussion livestream programme and, for the first time, a programme of lectures at the online cinema. Between September and December, DOCUSPACE will become a meeting point for Rights Now! discussions and DOCU/CLASS lectures, which will provide a critical perspective for conceptualizing the key aspects of contemporary documentary filmmaking. On 22 September at 7 p.m., join the first Rights Now! livestream on Why Do LGBTIQ People Not Feel Safe in Ukraine?

In the first half of 2021, 53 cases of attacks on activists were recorded in Ukraine. According to the results of the ZMINA monitoring, LGBT activism became one of the most risky activities for the first time.

Each of us can realize they are different and come out at any moment in life. At the same time, we have the right to feel safe regardless of the characteristic that makes us different. The Ukrainian reality, unfortunately, does not provide that.

In particular, the increased activity of groups promoting hate and violence is taking on the features of a targeted intimidation campaign against members of LGBTIQ communities. Investigations into these and other hate crimes are not always effective. During the discussion, we will talk about the efforts which the government and the civil society must make in order to create a safe environment for everyone.

We will discuss the efforts which the government and the civil society must make to create a safe environment for everyone together with Anastasia Eva Domani, a transgender woman and the executive director of the Cohort NGO; and Tymur Levchuk, a human rights advocate and the executive director of the Fulcrum UA NGO. The discussion will be moderated by Tania Kasian, a journalist and communications manager for the Fulcrum UA NGO.

The discussion is organized for the occasion of the screening of Things We Dare Not Do, the film that won the Special Mention in the Rights Now! category at the 18th Docudays UA.
