UKRAINIAN DOC PREVIEW Awards

02 May 2020

Ukrainian Doc Preview creates an opportunity for Ukrainian teams to present their full-length documentary projects in production and post-production to international festivals selectors and representatives of international funds, sales companies, and broadcasters. This year, online-pitch was held in the format of virtual round tables, each bringing together one project team, moderator and panel of experts. Explore the selected projects that have received Ukrainian Doc Preview awards.

UKRAINIAN INSTITUTE AWARD

150,000 UAH for promotion and distribution

Salt from Bonneville / Director: Simon Mozgovyi

The jury decided to support one project that brings a unique Ukrainian story set in an unusual environment. In a rather exotic setting, a very universal tale unfolds. With stunning visual images, a story of two close people is presented in a very sensitive way. A true documentary buddy movie, a film about hardship, personal challenges and, in the end, about accepting one’s place in the world.

UKRAINIAN DOC PREVIEW JURY:

  • Olga Birzul / Head of Film Programmes at the Ukrainian Institute, Ukraine
  • Zdeněk Blaha / Programme Director at the Institute of Documentary Film (IDF), Czech Republic
  • Natalia Arshavskaya / Commissioning Editor, Current Time TV, USA
  • Patrizia Mancini / International Development Executive at Sunny Side of the Doc, France

CURRENT TIME AWARD

$2,000

Iron Butterflies / Director: Roman Liubyi

This is a piece of original and brilliant filmmaking that manages to use a whole new language to tell the obvious story about the surreality of war.  We all know about the tragedy of MH-17. It was a devastating act of war that alerted the world to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. But this film draws on documentary techniques, theatre, and an original strong artistic vision  to look at how a single act affected ordinary lives. It shows how lives can be randomly upended or connected, and the thin  line between the real and the surreal.  And by exploring the relationship between chance and planning, it epitomizes life and art.

EAST SILVER CARAVAN AWARD

Diary of a Bride of Christ /  Director: Marta Smerechynska

We decided to support the project, which is a very personal family story. A story of personal courage, faith and determination, but also a unique insight into a secluded community. We appreciate the director's will to ask difficult questions, to seek the understanding and present it in a very cinematic way.

The Elf's Tower / Director: Polina Kelm
