After seven years of the war in Eastern Ukraine, what is left unsaid and unfilmed about it? War Note is composed of personal videos from mobile phones, camcorders, photo cameras and GoPros recorded by Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline of the war with Russia. The film’s director Roman Liubyi and film journalist Alex Malyshenko will talk about the relevance of war films today, the trendiness of archives and whether War Note can be called an archive film, as well as social and political aspects of documentary filmmaking.
Roman Liubyi graduated from the Valentyn Marchenko studio at Kyiv’s National I.K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University. He is a member of the Babylon’13 project and works in film, theatre and music. His film War Note participates in the DOCU/UKRAINE national competition and is nominated for the RIGHTS NOW! Award.
Alex Malyshenko is a film journalist born in Kyiv. His texts are published in LB.ua, Moviegram, Don’t Take Fake. He focuses on the Ukrainian and world cinema. Alex is also the co-founder and moderator of the Polotno film club that has organised screenings involving Ukrainian filmmaking crews.
