It’s a unique opportunity for makers of short films to meet representatives of VOD platforms and join efforts in collaboration with them.
“The way we consume media has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. The dominance of long-form films and strict format broadcast television is being pushed aside by the tide of digital media platforms. Short-form video now reigns our news feeds, reaching a global audience at the click of a button – and this rings just as true for the world of documentary,” writes Flora Gregory, the director of the Global Short Docs Forum.
“A similar effort now needs to be focused on short documentaries that for decades has been directed at feature docs – training filmmakers with the appropriate skills to make them (a different set of skills to those required to make long form films), along with the necessary financial backing and business models to sustain them,” adds Flora Gregory. “This is an exciting time for short documentary filmmakers, and those commissioners, film funds, media platforms and festivals who embrace the short format will unlock a world of powerful and engaging storytelling.”
This year the Global Short Docs Forum will be held in Kyiv, Ukraine during Docudays UA on March 26–29, 2019. Over the course of a 4-day workshop, the 16 selected filmmakers will be given the chance to learn from industry experts, build a global network of like-minded peers, and ultimately pitch their selected projects to commissioners from digital platforms.
