The contemporary information society has fundamental contradictions. On the one hand, people want to preserve their private lives intact so that the government and commercial organisations can’t monitor their every move. On the other hand, people publish a considerable amount of information about themselves online, or choose to use services which are impossible without data collection.
Businesses, in turn, want to collect, store and use information about people freely and without limitations, and to make money doing it.
What is the value of private information? Why is personal data now being called the ‘currency of the 21st century’?
