For the First Time, Docudays UA Will Screen Films with Audio Descriptions

21 March 2018

This year, Docudays UA together with Fight for Right has prepared two films for people with visual impairments.

The practice of accompanying video content with special audio descriptions is widespread abroad. But in Ukraine, unfortunately, there are very few such films. Docudays UA is the first festival in Ukraine that will screen films with audio descriptions, which will make them accessible for blind people.

There will be two films in total. These area a film from the DOCU/WORLD competition program, The Distant Barking of Dogs by Siimon Lereng WIlmont (March 28, 7 p.m.; and March 29, 12:15 at the Zhovten Cinema), and the film The First Company by Yaroslav Pilunsky, Yulia Shashkova, Yuriy Gruzinov from the DOCU/UKRAINE national competition program (March 24, 8:15 p.m.; and March 25, 11:15 a.m. at the Zhovten Cinema).

You can receive headphones directly before the film screenings at the entrance to the cinema hall. Because the number of seats at film screenings with audio descriptions is limited, please register beforehand.

The DOCU/CLASS program will also include a masterclass where experts will explain the process of creating audio descriptions, using special computer programs, adhering to the standards of audio description, editing of audio tracks. They will also provide an opportunity to make short audio descriptions of video clips by yourself.

The screenings are supported by the International Renaissance Foundation and the Campaign Against Discrimination.
