DOCU/THURSDAY: Online Workshop for Documentary Filmmakers

24 September 2018

We are continuing the good tradition of our “online film school”, and we invite you to the BIG IDEA website every week to watch DOCU/CLASS! This year’s festival masterclasses included a number of lectures, creative meetings and discussions that touched upon such topics as the role of television and film criticism in our country, poetry and virtual reality in documentary cinema, and, of course, creating films with special “impact campaigns”.

The first video is going to be available online already this Thursday, on September 27. We start with experts in archival films Barbara Wurm and Stanislav Menzelevskyi. They will speak about how early Soviet documentaries constructed the image of the new woman.

Every Thursday, videos will appear in the Practices section on the BIG IDEA website. Afterwards, you will be able to watch them on our upgraded online documentary platform DOCU/SPACE. The videos will be available with simultaneous translations to Ukrainian and in the original languages.

Poetry in the documentary. Talk with Luciano Barisone and Lauren Wissot

In particular, they will include meetings in the dialogue format. Poetry and the lack of difference between feature and documentary film will be discussed by two well-known film critics and festival programmers Luciano Barisone and Lauren Wissot.

His own artist talks will be held by the star of Lithuanian film Arunas Matelis; the talks will be moderated by the equally well-known documentary expert Tue Steen Muller. We also invited film critics from Ukraine, Denmark, Spain and the US to discuss documentary of change.

Discussion with film critics: The right to history in documentary cinema

During the festival, we organized a controversial roundtable about the effective distribution of documentaries#mce_temp_url# for the purpose of social change. For this conversation, we invited representatives of Ukrainian TV channels and their colleagues from the young media project Current Time, which was launched by Radio Liberty with support from the Voice of America.

The practice-oriented masterclasses will be particularly interesting for all the players in the documentary film industry. In her lecture, the British expert Rebecca Ashdown speaks about how to design a unique and effective film distribution strategy and achieve the impact goals, because the documentary community today is capable of affecting social change.

Rebecca has considerable experience in the field — suffice to say that she was the head of the distribution campaign for the film No by Pablo Larrain in collaboration with Amnesty International.

The masterclass 'Films accessible for people with visual impairments: How to make audio descriptions

The organization Fight for Right prepared for this year’s festival a masterclass about making audio descriptions for people with impaired vision. Watch about all the details of this process in the recording of our workshop.

We also engaged with some new tendencies in documentary filmmaking. In particular, the photographer Joseph Sywenkyj and the international affairs reporter Natalia Humeniuk are going to discuss how they worked with the VR 360° technology when they were creating the documentary project Wounds 360° about Ukrainian soldiers recovering after they were wounded in the war in Eastern Ukraine.
