Discussion – Roma Woman. New Vision and a screening of the film Seven stories of successful Roma women in Ukraine

Duration
120’

Organisers: the International Renaissance Foundation

The Roma woman has changed, her long flower-patterned skirt has given way to a business suit, and fortune-telling has been replaced by important contributions to the world’s socioeconomic situation. These women have overcome many obstacles: within themselves, in their communities, in the wider society – but they remain unnoticed. Because of the patriarchal order which often characterises the Roma community, women often remain ‘in the shadow’, when in fact her image deserves not only to be respected by the Roma community, but also recognised by Ukrainian society at large. It is time to debunk the myths and form a new vision of outdated stereotypes; this is the goal of this event.

Participants:

Raisa Nabaranchuk (Rani Romani) – Roma writer and poet

Maryna Kazanska – Roma activist, leader and head of the Romano Drom NGO (Chernihiv)

Mila Krykunova – actor of the Romance theatre of music and drama by and for Roma

Zemfira Kondur – Roma activist, leader, vice president of the Roma Women’s Foundation Chirikli.
