The Virtual Present: VR Technologies in the Documentary Genre

Duration
90’

A discussion between Natalia Gumenyuk and Joseph Sywenkyj about the particularities of working with VR-360 technologies in documentary filmmaking. The conversation will focus on the Hromadske project Wounds 360° about Ukrainian soldiers recovering after being injured in the war in Eastern Ukraine.

Joseph Sywenkyj is an American photographer of Ukrainian origin who specialises in photo reporting, portrait and news photography. He has worked as a photo reporter in Eastern European and Central Asian countries, in the Middle East and in North America. In 2014, he started to work on a project about the wounded Maidan activists and Ukrainian soldiers, which gradually developed into the Wounds 360° documentary.

Nataliya Gumenyuk is a Ukrainian reporter on international affairs, head of Hromadske Television NGO, and editor of the Hromadske.World and Hromadske International projects. Since the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity, she has been covering the events on Maidan, in Crimea and in Donbas. She has reported on political and social events in more than 50 countries. In 2015, she published the book Maydan Tahrir: In Search of Lost Revolution, a collection of reports from the Middle East in which she analyses the changes in these societies after their revolutions.
