For the first time in the history of Docudays UA, the competitors in the DOCU/UKRAINE competition are feature-length films. Out of the 100 applications that were submitted to the debut collection of the national competition, we have selected 6 participants. All the films are national premieres. Most of them were created with government support.
As the film critic Ihor Hrabovych rightly noted, “The feature-length national competition programme DOCU/UKRAINE is in and of itself unprecedented - in fact it is sensational. It is the evidence of the maturity of both the festival and Ukrainian filmmaking, which is shown not only in the number of films and their topics, but also in the geography of the participants of the filmmaking process, which is not limited to Ukraine.
This year's national competition can be divided into two parts: half of the films are made by filmmakers who live in Ukraine and who primarily operate in the national context, and the other half are filmed by directors whose life and art has, for a long time or not, been related to living outside the country, and therefore their perception of the world takes into account a wider context. Each of these authors has their own topic, their own style and their own worldview.”
Docudays UA will launch a successful festival rotation for most of these films, and will become a new milestone in their authors’ careers. We invite media representatives and everyone else to an open meeting with the Ukrainian filmmakers.
