As the ‘space capital of the Ukrainian SSR‘, Dnipropetrovsk was a closed city until 1987. This special status allowed the city to start building a subway system. In 1995, six subway stations were opened. But since then, not a single station has been built. For 20 years, each mayor promises to continue the construction. Nowadays, the metro system in Dnipro is one of the shortest in the world. But a small number of passengers and the almost complete lack of invasive advertisements have preserved a special atmosphere in the Dnipro subway, an atmosphere of an underground retro-futuristic city.
Lera Malchenko and Oleksandr Hants created their own independent film studio called fantastic little splash in 2016, and made their first film Metro as a part of this project. Before that, they filmed for the Kultura Medialna NGO and for Hromadske TV Dnipro.
