Docudays UA at colonies and education institutions

On July 7th, at 12 PM at the office of the State Penitentiary System of Ukraine (Melnykova str. 81, Kyiv) in the course of the project “Campaign for human rights in Ukraine using the instruments of the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival” a Memorandum on Mutual Understanding between the SPSU and Docudays UA will be signed.

 

Signing the Memorandum will be the Head of the Festival’s organizing committee, Svitlana Smal, and the Head of the SPSU, Serhiy Starenkyi.

To attend the meeting were also invited Docudays UA Program Director, Hennadiy Kofman, and coordinator of Docudays US cinema clubs at education institutions of the SPSU, senior research worker at science and research laboratory of the science and research center at the Criminal Law Enforcement Service Institute, internal service lieutenant-colonel Oleh Duka, and the SPSU officers to be further responsible for project implementation.

 

Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival and the State Penitentiary System of Ukraine are currently establishing permanent Docudays UA cinema clubs for media education on human rights.

 

Such cinema clubs will operate at 10 institutions for sentences enforcement and 5 education institutions for training colony and isolation ward workers: at the Criminal Law Enforcement Service Institute, SPSU Law College in Chernihiv, Criminal Law Enforcement Service College in Bila Tserkva, Criminal Law Enforcement Service College in Dniprodzerzhinsk, Criminal Law Enforcement Service College in Khmelnytskyi.

 

At Docudays cinema clubs, students, teachers, professors, colony and ward workers, as well as those incarcerated, will have an opportunity to watch best human rights documentaries from all over the world, discuss those with human rights advocates, experts in various fields of law, artists, etc.

 

Project founders have already established festival film collections and obtained the approval of copyright holders for multiple free screenings at cinema clubs. For now, methodology guides are developed to support club coordinators; moderators are trained, a network of professionals in human rights advocacy is established – all these will participate in discussions and give expert advice to club coordinators.

 

Cinema clubs at institutions of the “Campaign for human rights in Ukraine using the instruments of the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival” project which is financially supported by the European Union.

 

Establishing Docudays UA cinema clubs, film collections and methodology guides is also supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the NED.

 

Implementing the project is Kherson Fund for Charity and Health.

 

Partners: Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, the Centre for Modern Information Techniques and Visual Arts, Kherson City Journalist Association Pivden, Donetsk non-government advocacy organization Donetskyi Memorial, Chernihiv city youth organization Molodizhna Alternatyva (M’ART).

 

Pilot screenings, discussions and interactive events are planned for July 8th at Chernihiv Law Callege and Criminal Law Enforcement Service Institute in Kyiv.
